Release of the Sway 1.4 user environment, utilizing Wayland

Prepared release of the composite manager Sway 1.4 (release 1.3 was not formed), built using the Wayland protocol and fully compatible with the tiling window manager i3 and the panel i3bar. The project code is written in C and is distributed is licensed under MIT. The project aims to be used on Linux and FreeBSD.

Compatibility with i3 is provided at the level of commands, configuration files, and IPC, allowing Sway to be used as a transparent replacement for i3, utilizing Wayland instead of X11. Sway allows windows to be organized on the screen logically rather than spatially. Windows are arranged in a grid that makes optimal use of screen space and allows for quick manipulation of windows using only the keyboard.

To create a full-fledged user environment, the following accompanying components are offered: swayidle (background process implementing the KDE idle protocol), swaylock (screensaver), mako (notification manager), grim (screenshot creation), slurp (screen area selection), wf-recorder (video capture), waybar (application panel), virtboard (on-screen keyboard), wl-clipboard (clipboard management), wallutils (wallpaper management).

Sway is being developed as a modular project built on top of the library wlroots, which encapsulates all basic primitives for organizing the work of the composite manager. Wlroots includes backends for
abstracting access to screens, input devices, rendering without direct calls to OpenGL, interacting with KMS/DRM, libinput, Wayland, and X11 (providing a layer for running X11 applications on Xwayland). In addition to Sway, the wlroots library is actively used in other projects, including Librem5 and Cage. In addition to C/C++, bindings have been developed for Scheme, Common Lisp, Go, Haskell, OCaml, Python, and Rust.

In the new release:

  • VNC protocol support added for remote desktop access. Operation is organized through a server wayvnc, which can connect to running sessions based on Wayland, creates a virtual input device, and streams screen output using the RFB protocol. Wayvnc can also be used to start virtual desktops on servers without a monitor. Support for the previously offered RDP-based backend has been discontinued.
  • Partial support added for launching the taskbar developed by the MATE project;
  • Implemented the ability to configure character display delays during input (options max_render_time and sway-output);
  • Support added for separate handling of key groups on the keyboard (for specialized keyboards);
  • Support for the protocol xdg-shell v6 (unstable version v6 is no longer relevant after stabilization xdg-shell).
