The new Microsoft Edge browser, like Google Chrome, uses the Chromium engine, which means it can work with many existing Chrome extensions. However, when trying to use the Google Web Store with the Edge browser, you might encounter a message suggesting you switch to Chrome.
The original Edge was launched with Windows 10 but never gained popularity among Windows users. Microsoft tried to force users to use Edge by resorting to scare tactics and annoying pop-up windows. But this did not help. Now Google is employing similar tactics against Microsoft.
The updated Edge browser has the capability to install extensions from third-party sources. Microsoft has its own extension store, but it is much smaller than the Chrome Web Store. However, if you access the Chrome Web Store using Edge, you will see a small pop-up window stating that switching to Chrome is the best way for 'safe extension use.'
Google does not explain what the security issue is. Fortunately, you can ignore this warning and continue installing extensions in Edge.
This is somewhat reminiscent of the pop-ups in Windows 10 that informed users that using Chrome negatively affects energy consumption. Although for Google, this type of 'notification' is not entirely new. Sometimes, it 'warns' users of other browsers using its products that Chrome works better with these services.
Interestingly, the Opera and Brave browsers, which also use the Chromium engine, do not display any warning when visiting the Google online store.
