Samba — a set of programs and utilities for working with network disks and printers on various operating systems via the protocol SMB/CIFS. It consists of client and server components. It is free software released under the GPL v3.
Key Changes:
- The code has been cleared of all cryptographic implementations in favor of external libraries. The main one chosen is GnuTLS, the minimum required version 3.4.7. This will enhance the speed of the system — during CIFS testing from the Linux kernel 5.3 an increase was recorded in write speed by 3 times, and in read speed by 2.5.
- Searching through SMB shares is now performed using Spotlight instead of the previously used GNOME Tracker.
- A new VFS module io_uring has been added, utilizing the Linux kernel io_uring interface for asynchronous I/O. It also supports buffering.
- In the smb.conf configuration file, support for the write cache size parameter has been discontinued, due to the emergence of the module io_uring.
- The module vfs_netatalk, whose support was previously discontinued, has been removed.
- The backend BIND9_FLATFILE has been declared obsolete and will be removed in one of the upcoming releases.
- The zlib library has been added to the build dependencies, while the built-in implementation has been removed from the code.
- Now, Python 3.5 is required instead of the previously used Python 3.4.
It is also worth noting that OSS-Fuzz is now used for testing the code, which has allowed for the identification and fixing of numerous bugs in the code.The release of Samba 4.12.0 was announced on March 3rd.
