The new version of the guidance notes that supporting dual-stack creates additional operational complexities and recommends that internal networks of government entities transition to IPv6-only instead of dual stack. Of course, public services should maintain IPv4 addresses during the transition.
The guidance also requires that by 2023 all new systems coming online must support IPv6. Additionally,
- At least 20% of network-connected resources must be IPv6-only by the end of 2023
- At least 50% of network-connected resources must be IPv6-only by the end of 2024
- At least 80% of network-connected resources must be IPv6-only by the end of 2025
This seems to be quite an aggressive plan and will put significant pressure on the industry. For instance, various 'government clouds' will need to at least support IPv6, and possibly operate in IPv6-only mode.
