Less than a year later the first stable release, on International Women's Day, the second major version was presented Pleroma — a federated social network for microblogging, written in Elixir and utilizing the standardized W3C protocol ActivityPub. This is the second largest network in the Fediverse.
Unlike its closest competitor — Mastodon, which is written in Ruby and relies on numerous resource-intensive components, Pleroma is a high-performance server that can run on low-powered systems, such as a Raspberry Pi or inexpensive VPS.
Pleroma also implements the Mastodon API, allowing compatibility with alternative Mastodon clients, like Tusky, Husky from 
a1batross or Fedilab. Moreover, Pleroma comes with a fork of the Mastodon interface source code (to be precise, the interface Glitch Social — an improved branch of Mastodon from the community), which makes for a smoother transition for users from Mastodon or Twitter with a TweetDeck interface.
Besides the Mastodon interface, Pleroma can integrate any other frontend, as Pleroma is positioned as a universal framework for building social network servers in the Fediverse. This opportunity was, for example, utilized by the project Mobilizon — a server for community meetings, taking the source code of Pleroma for its backend.
Despite the change of the major version, the release does not boast a wealth of new visible features, but it is worth noting:
- the removal of outdated functionality, in particular, support for the OStatus protocol — the oldest protocol in the Fediverse;
- this means that from now on, Pleroma will stop federating with servers that do not support ActivityPub, like GNU Social;
- the option to display the account type (for example, this is a regular user without the corresponding status, bot or group);
- a static frontend that does not require JavaScript to load posts for visitors from outside;
- a 'private' mode, in which the frontend does not display information for outside visitors;
- emoji reactions to statuses, which will eventually federate with Mastodon in the future, Misskey and Honk;
- an increment of the major version engine for interface customization and theme additions;
- the inclusion of an integrated captcha for registration by default;
- ignoring users at the domain level in the interface;
- numerous internal changes and bug fixes.
