LTS branch developers of the distribution (LTS Team) Debian 8 Jessie have announced their intention to extend support Debian 8 for a period exceeding the standard 5 years. Initially, support for the eighth version of the distribution was planned until July 2020 year.
Extended support will be provided by Freexian through the 'LTS Extended' program.
Under the extended support for the distribution, a limited set of packages will be supported, covering only two architectures — amd64 and i386.
Support for some packages will not be provided; they will be replaced with:
- Kernel Linux 3.16 will be replaced with Linux 4.9, backported from version 9 of the distribution
- Openjdk-7 will be replaced with openjdk-8
- Tomcat7 will only be supported until March 2021
To connect to support, you will need to add a special repository from Freexian to sources.list. Access to the repository will be open, and the number of packages in it will depend on the number of project sponsors and their required packages.
