Not long ago, the popular messenger WhatsApp added support for dark mode, but that doesn't mean the developers stopped working on new features. This time, however, users should not expect anything particularly groundbreaking, but rather a function that has been present for years in competing messengers. We are talking about the auto-delete feature for messages.
In beta versions of WhatsApp 2.20.83 and 2.20.84, the ability to set a message retention period for regular chats was introduced. A similar feature was previously seen in one of the beta versions of the app, but at that time, the developers implemented automatic message deletion only for group chats. It seems that their plans have changed, and users will now be able to configure automatic message deletion for any conversation.
Published screenshots show that in the settings of regular chats, the option to choose the duration for message retention has reappeared. Depending on their preferences, users can select how long to keep the conversations. Several options are available, ranging from 1 hour to 1 year. If needed, this feature can be disabled by selecting the appropriate menu item. Once activated, an image of a clock appears next to the message's send time, indicating that it will be deleted after the chosen retention period ends.
At this point, it is unknown when the new feature might appear in the stable version of WhatsApp. Clearly, the developers are currently testing it. Most likely, the auto-delete feature will become available to a larger user base in one of the future updates.
