NsCDE, a retro CDE-style environment that supports modern technologies

As part of the project NsCDE (Not so Common Desktop Environment) develops a desktop environment offering a retro-style interface CDE (Common Desktop Environment), adapted for use on modern Unix-like systems and Linux. The environment is based on the window manager FVWM with themes, applications, patches, and enhancements to recreate the original CDE desktop. The project code is distributed is licensed under GPLv3. Enhancements are written in Python and Shell.

The project's goal is to provide a comfortable and convenient environment for retro-style enthusiasts that supports modern technologies without discomfort due to lack of functionality. To give user applications a CDE style, theme generators for Xt, Xaw, Motif, GTK2, GTK3, Qt4, and Qt5 have been prepared, allowing the styling of most programs using X11 into a retro interface. NsCDE allows linking CDE styling with modern technologies such as font rasterization using XFT, Unicode, dynamic and functional menus, virtual desktops, applets, wallpapers, theme/icon styling, etc.
