Fedora Linux Developers migrate the RPM package database (rpmdb) from BerkeleyDB to SQLite. The main reason for the change is the use of an outdated version of Berkeley DB 5.x in rpmdb, which has not been maintained for several years. The transition to newer releases is hindered from Berkeley DB 6 to AGPLv3, the requirements of which also apply to applications that use BerkeleyDB as a library (RPM under GPLv2, while AGPL with GPLv2).
Additionally, the current implementation of
rpmdb based on BerkeleyDB does not provide the necessary reliability as it does not utilize transactions and is unable to detect inconsistencies in the database. The changes required for using SQLite will be proposed in the release . To convert the database format, simply using the command "rpmdb —rebuilddb" will suffice.
The new implementation of rpmdb is planned to be included in Fedora 33, while maintaining support for BerkeleyDB for compatibility. In Fedora 34, support for BerkeleyDB will be switched to read-only mode.
