GitHub, owned by Microsoft, announced the acquisition of npm, a popular package manager for JavaScript applications. The Node Package Manager hosts over 1.3 million packages, and the service supports more than 12 million developers.
GitHub states that npm will remain free for developers, and GitHub plans to invest in npm's development in terms of performance, reliability, and scalability.
In the future, GitHub and npm are set to be integrated to further enhance security and allow developers to carefully track npm packages from their Pull Requests. As for npm's paid clients (Pro, Teams, and Enterprise), GitHub plans to enable users to migrate their private npm packages to GitHub Packages.
