Ahead of the Build 2020 conference, a mention of the modular operating system Windows Core has reappeared in the Geekbench test suite database, which had previously appeared in leaks. Microsoft has not officially confirmed its existence, but unofficially data has leaked.
It is expected that Windows Core OS will be able to run on laptops, ultrabooks, dual-screen devices, HoloLens holographic headsets, and more. There is a possibility that smartphones will also emerge based on it. In any case, it boasts a modular system, which may indicate various graphical environments, similar to different DE in Linux distributions.
A new entry has appeared in the Geekbench database the virtual machine, running on 64-bit Windows Core. The hardware basis is a PC powered by the Intel Core i5-L15G7 Lakefield processor with a base clock speed of 1.38 GHz and 2.95 GHz in turbo boost.
Unfortunately, the test results are unlikely to tell anything more than the mere existence of the OS. However, that is already significant, considering the lack of official statements from Redmond.
Currently, there is no precise information on when Windows Core OS will be released, in what form, under which edition, and so on. It is likely that the first build based on it will be Windows 10X, which is expected this year.
It is noteworthy that Microsoft plans to significantly improve container performance in Windows 10X, allowing Win32 applications to run at the same speed as on regular Windows 10.
