Since the release of Windows 10 in 2015, Microsoft has been continuously improving it to enhance the usability of tablets. The company has done a tremendous amount of work in this direction. This is especially noticeable when comparing Windows 10 to previous versions of the OS, although there is still work to be done.
The new Windows 10 Insider Preview build 19592 for Fast Ring users, who receive the latest test builds of the operating system at the risk of encountering unstable software, has acquired a set of features that Microsoft calls 'Tablet Posture.' These features are primarily aimed at 2-in-1 devices, which are becoming increasingly popular in the market as an alternative to traditional laptops. The Tablet Posture capabilities were tested by Microsoft in earlier Insider Preview builds, but for unknown reasons, they decided to discontinue them later.
Microsoft states that the new functionality is completely unrelated to the existing tablet mode and is specifically designed for use on 2-in-1 devices:
- taskbar icons are spaced wider apart;
- the search box on the taskbar is replaced with a search icon;
- the on-screen keyboard automatically appears when the text input field is tapped;
- the spacing between items in File Explorer has increased for more convenient interaction via touch.
Microsoft clarified that these improvements will not be available to all participants of the testing program at the same time; instead, they will be rolled out in waves.
It seems that with the introduction of Tablet Posture, Microsoft aims to provide 2-in-1 device users with the core benefits of a full standard interface without the need to switch to an extended tablet mode. This looks like a sensible compromise.
