Release of the Linux distribution openEuler 20.03, developed by Huawei

Huawei Company introduced Linux distribution openEuler 20.03, which became the first release that will be maintained under a long-term support (LTS) cycle. Package updates for openEuler 20.03 will be issued until March 31, 2024. The repositories and installation ISO images (x86_64 and aarch64) are for free download from providing the source texts of the packages. The source texts specific to the distribution components are hosted on the Gitee service.

openEuler is based on the developments of the commercial distribution EulerOS, which is a fork of the CentOS package base and optimized for use on servers with ARM64 processors. The protection methods applied in the EulerOS distribution are certified by the Ministry of Public Security of China and recognized as compliant with the CC EAL4+ (Germany), NIST CAVP (USA), and CC EAL2+ (USA) requirements. EulerOS is is one of five operating systems (EulerOS, macOS, Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX) and the only Linux distribution certified by the Open Group for compliance with the UNIX 03.

The differences between openEuler and CentOS are quite significant and not limited to mere rebranding. For example, in openEuler is provided the modified Linux kernel 4.19, systemd 243, bash 5.0, and
the desktop based on GNOME 3.30. Many ARM64-specific optimizations have been made, some of which have already been transferred to the main codebases of the Linux kernel, GCC, OpenJDK, and Docker.

Among the stated advantages of openEuler:

  • Focus on achieving maximum performance on multi-core systems and high parallelism in request processing. Optimization of the file cache management mechanism has allowed for the removal of unnecessary locks and increased the number of requests processed in parallel in Nginx by 15%.
  • Integrated library KAE, which allows the use of hardware accelerators Hisilicon Kunpeng to accelerate the performance of various algorithms (cryptographic operations, regular expressions, compression etc.) from 10% to 100%.
  • Simplified toolkit for managing isolated containers iSulad, network configurator clibcni , and runtime lcr (Lightweight Container Runtime, OCI-compliant, but unlike runc, written in C and uses gRPC). The use of lightweight containers with iSulad has been noted to accelerate container startup by up to 35% and reduce memory consumption by up to 68%.
  • Optimized OpenJDK build demonstrating a 20% performance increase due to an upgraded memory management system and the application of advanced compilation optimizations.
  • Automatic configuration optimization system A-Tune, utilizing machine learning methods for tuning system operation parameters. Tests by Huawei show that automatic optimization based on system usage scenario can increase efficiency by up to 30%.
  • Support for various hardware architectures, such as Kunpeng and x86 processors (with an increase in supported architectures expected in the future).

Huawei also announced the launch of four commercial editions of openEuler — Kylin Server OS, iSoft Server OS, deepinEuler, and EulixOS Server, prepared by third-party manufacturers Kylinsoft, iSoft, Uniontech, and ISCAS (Institute of Software Chinese Academy of Sciences), who have joined the community working on developing openEuler. Huawei initially presents openEuler as an open collaborative project developed with community participation. Currently, a technical committee, a security committee, and a public secretariat for openEuler have already begun their work.

The community plans to create certification, training, and technical support services. LTS releases are planned to be formed every two years, while functional development versions will be released every six months. The project also commits to prioritizing the transfer of changes to Upstream and returning all developments to the community in the form of open projects.
