Developers of the Linux Mint distribution , that the next significant release based on the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS package base will only support 64-bit systems. The creation of builds for 32-bit x86 systems will be discontinued. The release is expected in July or late June. The supported desktop environments include Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce.
It is worth noting that Canonical stopped creating 32-bit installation builds back in Ubuntu 18.04, and in Ubuntu 20.04 it will completely cease building packages for the i386 architecture (including the abandonment of multiarch library creation necessary for running 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment), but then its decision and provided for the creation and delivery of 32-bit packages with libraries necessary to continue the operation of outdated programs that remain only in 32-bit form or require 32-bit libraries.
The reason for discontinuing support for the i386 architecture is cited as the inability to maintain packages at the same level as other supported architectures in Ubuntu, for example, due to the unavailability for 32-bit systems of the latest developments in security enhancements and mitigations against fundamental vulnerabilities like Spectre. Maintaining the package base for i386 requires significant resources for development and quality control, which is not justified due to the small user base (the number of i386 systems is estimated at 1% of the total number of installed systems).
