Google is experimenting with hiding extension icons by default

Google Inc. introduced an experimental implementation of a new add-ons menu that will provide users with more information about the permissions granted to each add-on. The essence of the change is that by default, pinning add-on icons next to the address bar will be discontinued. Instead, a new menu marked with a puzzle icon will appear next to the address bar, listing all available add-ons and their permissions. After installing an add-on, the user will need to explicitly enable pinning the add-on icon in the toolbar, while evaluating the permissions granted to the add-on.

To ensure that the add-on does not get lost, an indicator with information about the new add-on is displayed immediately after installation. The new mode can be activated through the setting "chrome://flags/#extensions-toolbar-menu". If the experiment is deemed successful, the change
will be applied to all users in one of the upcoming stable releases.

In the comments regarding the change, the developers of the add-ons mainly reacted negatively to the change, as in the overwhelming majority of cases, users will not make any additional settings beyond installation, and the add-on will end up hidden.
