Russian telescope sees black hole 'awakening'

The Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS) reports that the Spektr-RG space observatory has recorded, possibly, the β€œawakening” of a black hole.

Russian telescope sees black hole 'awakening'

The Russian X-ray telescope ART-XC, installed on board the Spektr-RG spacecraft, has detected a bright X-ray source in the region of the center of the Galaxy. It turned out to be a black hole 4U 1755-338.

It is curious that the named object was discovered back in the early seventies by the first orbital X-ray observatory Uhuru. However, in 1996, the hole stopped showing signs of activity. And now she is alive.

β€œAfter analyzing the data obtained, the astrophysicists of the IKI RAS suggested that the ART-XC telescope is observing the beginning of a new flare from this black hole. The outburst is associated with the resumption of accretion onto the black hole of matter from an ordinary star, which together form a binary system, ”the message says.

We add that the ART-XC telescope is already reviewed half of the entire sky. Together with the Russian instrument, the German eROSITA telescope operates on board the Spektr-RG observatory. It is expected that already in June 2020 the first map of the entire sky will be obtained.
