This is about a basic and inexpensive device costing only $500. Its purpose is to sustain or save lives in case more advanced equipment is not available. These devices are primarily intended for developing countries and in case of global disasters.
The new device is based on an Ambo pump with automatic drive and a 'smart' computer system. The apparatus was developed in just 10 days by a group of investors and university staff under the leadership of Dr. David Alkaheir. All information about the device is open to developers and engineers worldwide. The project team is already working with stakeholders from 20 countries.
The trials of the new device were conducted by Professor Yoav Mintz, head of the Surgical Robotics Innovation Center at 'Hadassah' and a researcher at the Hebrew University.
According to the developers, the first industrial samples will be received in two and a half weeks; they will be sent to 20 countries for additional checks and licensing for use. Within two months, these machines can be produced on a mass scale in countries that do not have their own ventilators, for example — in Guatemala.
Professor Mintz described the clinical trials: 'We anesthetized a pig and inserted the AmboVent device's tube into the animal's lungs. We used pigs because their size, anatomical structure, and circulatory system resemble those of humans. When the test animal was in a state of artificial coma, we checked the only function of the new machine — the proper delivery of oxygen to the lungs, without causing additional harm to the internal organs. Our experience showed that the machine successfully passed all tests. Oxygen was delivered on time, in the required volume, and maintained the animal's life for an extended period.'
According to the testing protocol, a successful outcome was defined as three consecutive successful trials under extreme conditions. This part of the testing also concluded positively, confirming that the stable operation of the device is not coincidental.
