A Canonical employee promoting Ubuntu in WSL and Hyper-V shared on Twitter, a video of Microsoft Word and Excel running on Ubuntu 20.04 without using Wine or WSL.
Running MS Word as "The program works quite quickly on a system with an Intel Core i5 6300U processor with integrated graphics. This is not a run through Wine, nor a remote desktop/cloud, or a GNOME session running in WSL on Windows. This is something I created. The next step: I plan to add file associations." The developer for MS Excel stated, "File associations have been added. Working with the Windows environment/virtual machine is done via SSH."
So far, the author, , says that this is his personal project and there is no talk of an official port. How it is all implemented is not specified, but it involves a lightweight form of virtualization in the Linux environment, which also allows working with the clipboard and opening programs from Windows directly in Linux.
