Microsoft has long envisioned a unified operating system for all devices, yet none of its attempts to achieve this have succeeded so far. However, the company is closer than ever to realizing this idea with the imminent release of Windows 10X. Nevertheless, development on this revolutionary OS hasn’t gone as smoothly as hoped.
According to sources familiar with the development of Windows 10X, Microsoft is dissatisfied with the performance of several Win32 applications when virtualized in the new operating system. These programs, running in the background, fail to execute some core functions, such as screen sharing and sending notifications. Many outdated applications are facing compatibility issues.
As is known, Windows 10X will be able to run classic applications, Universal Windows Apps, and Progressive Web Apps, using a separate container for each type. This should improve the battery life of devices and enhance the security of the operating system. Interestingly, there are currently no issues with the performance of Universal Windows Apps and Progressive Web Apps, which may suggest that the problems with Win32 applications are related to shortcomings in their container.
Fortunately, Microsoft has almost a year to address the existing issues with the operating system, as the company recently announced that Windows 10X will be unveiled to the public in 2021.
