Controversial changes have been made in the nighty builds of Firefox's reader mode interface

In nightly builds Firefox, which will form the basis for the release of Firefox 78, implemented has a redesigned reader mode, which is now aligned with the design elements Photon. The most noticeable change is the replacement of the compact side panel with a top panel featuring larger buttons and text labels. As a motivation for these changes, the aim was to make the font control buttons, speech synthesis call, and save to Pocket service more visible. Research has shown that users often overlook them and are unaware of their existence (the lack of necessity for these buttons may explain their invisibility).

The change has already caused dissatisfaction affected laptop users with widescreen displays, as the additional top panel reduces available vertical space, necessitates extra scrolling, and decreases the amount of content that can fit on the screen. As users scroll down, the text labels disappear and the panel size reduces, which can be distracting (the alteration in peripheral vision inadvertently draws the gaze upward). Furthermore, the new 'Done' button is misleading and does not remove the panel as one might think; instead, it initiates exit from reader mode.
