Microsoft is implementing a graphical server and GPU acceleration in WSL.

Microsoft announced the implementation of significant improvements in the WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) subsystem, which enables the execution of Linux executable files on Windows:

  • Added support for running Linux applications with a graphical interface, thereby eliminating the need for third-party X servers. This support is realized through virtualization access to the GPU.

An open driver has been prepared for the Linux kernel dxgkrnl, providing the device /dev/dxg with services that replicate WDDM D3DKMT of the Windows kernel. The driver establishes a connection with the physical GPU via the VM bus. Linux applications have the same level of access to the GPU as native Windows applications, without the need for resource partitioning between Windows and Linux.

Moreover, a library libd3d12.so is provided for Linux, offering direct access to the Direct3D 12 graphics API and compiled from the same code as the Windows library d3d12.dll. In the form of the DxCore library (libdxcore.so), a simplified version of the dxgi API is also provided. The libraries libd3d12.so and libdxcore.so are proprietary and are available only in binary distributions (mounted in /usr/lib/wsl/lib), compatible with Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Centos, SUSE, and other distributions based on Glibc.

OpenGL support in Mesa is provided through a layer, which translates calls to the DirectX 12 API. The implementation method for the Vulkan API is still in the planning stage.

  • Support for compute capabilities on graphics cards has been added, allowing for hardware acceleration for tasks such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. Initially, WSL environments will support CUDA and DirectML, which operate above the D3D12 API (for example, in a Linux environment, TensorFlow can be run with a backend for DirectML). OpenCL support is possible through a layer that maps calls to the DX12 API.

  • WSL installation will soon be supported via a simple command "wsl.exe --install".
