Many companies had to urgently test their business processes for compatibility with remote work technology during the lockdown. Some of them were satisfied with the results and plan to retain a portion of remote jobs even after the pandemic ends. VMware is among these companies, ready to allow up to 60% of its employees to work from home.
Even before the crisis brought on by the new coronavirus pandemic, as explained in an interview the company's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, stated that about 20% of VMware's staff worked outside the office. In the medium term, he mentioned that between 50% and 60% of VMware staff could transition to remote work, and it cannot be claimed that the company will be significantly different from many others. Twitter and Square have already announced that they may work remotely on a permanent basis, while the head of Facebook indicated that by the end of the decade, 50% of its employees could switch to this form of work.
"Sometimes it takes ten years to achieve a week's worth of progress. Sometimes a week gives you a decade’s worth of progress," Gelsinger explained. "Suddenly, education, healthcare, and remote work are making enormous strides forward." At the end of January, VMware's employee count reached 31,000. According to the CEO, smaller offices may be closed over time as the company shifts to remote work. The headquarters will also be reorganized, but will still imply that staff will be present in the office. In the last quarter, VMware demonstrated a 12% increase in revenue, but Gelsinger views the outlook for the next few quarters conservatively, as the company will "require new strengths" to realize new projects amid the pandemic.
