The final build of the Chromium-based Edge browser became available back in 2020, but to install the application, it was necessary to manually download it from the company's website first. Now, Microsoft has automated the process.
When installing, the previous version did not replace the old Microsoft Edge (Legacy). Additionally, it lacked some essential features that were planned to be included in the final build, such as support for ARM64 processors for Windows 10, synchronization of history and extensions, and so on.
In recent months, the company has been actively working on updating Edge, particularly focusing on the feature for synchronizing installed extensions. Unfortunately, the new version still lacks the features for synchronizing history and tabs, but Microsoft promises to add them this summer.
The company promises to release new versions of Edge every 6 weeks. Since the classic Edge was tied to the operating system itself, updates for it via the Windows Update center became available only once every 6 months when a major update for the OS was released.
Before installing the new Edge browser on computers with Windows 10 versions 1803, 1809, and 1903, the company recommends installing patches KB4525237, KB4519978, KB4523205, KB4520062, KB4517389, and KB4517211. For version 1909, no additional updates are required.
The new Chromium-based Edge browser can be installed through the Windows Update center or from Microsoft. As always, the company is gradually rolling out the new update. Therefore, at the time of writing this news, the offer to download the new Edge browser in the Windows Update center may not be available. After installation, the system will prompt for a reboot. Subsequently, the browser can be updated directly from the application itself.
In the coming months, Microsoft plans to add vertical tabs and a new sidebar with search functionality to Edge. Additionally, the company has been actively collaborating with Google to improve scrolling features and voice reading of web pages. Currently, Microsoft is working on enhancing the in Edge.
