Let’s remember that odd releases of Xfce components are experimental. In particular, development for future stable release Xfce 4.16 is ongoing within the 4.15.x branch.
The changes in xfdesktop 4.15 include updated icons, an increase in the minimum icon size to 16, a switch from exo-csource to xdt-csource, ensuring that all selections are cleared after a single click, the addition of a hotkey Shift+Ctrl+N for creating directories, the ability to search for icons as you type, along with bug fixes and memory leak elimination. Translations have been updated, including for Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Kazakh, and Uzbek languages.
In the Thunar file manager, version numbering has changed — releases are now named in line with other Xfce components (after 1.8.15, 4.15.0 was created directly). Compared to the 1.8.x branch, the new release shows efforts to stabilize and refine functionality. Notable improvements include:
- The ability to use environment variables (e.g., $HOME) in the address bar has been implemented;
- An option has been added to rename a copied file in case of a name conflict with an existing file;
- A button for pausing move or copy operations has been added;
- The ‘Sort by’ and ‘View as’ items have been removed from the shortcut menu; all context menus have been consolidated into one package;
- The deprecated GtkActionEntry has been replaced with XfceGtkActionEntry;
- In thumbnail view mode, file manipulation through the drag-and-drop interface has been enabled;
- The vertical size of the dialog for template information has been reduced;
- Android smartphones have been hidden from the network device group. The ‘network’ group has been moved to the bottom;
- The path mapping code for the input file path masks is now case-insensitive.
- New tabs have been added to the bottom of the standard paths list.
- Desktop actions have been added for the home directory, system summary (computer:///) and the trash.
- The root display has been removed from the file tree.
- A dialog for closing multiple tabs based on libxfce4ui has been added.
- A confirmation dialog for operations has been added when attempting to close a window with multiple tabs.
- A symbolic icon for the device ejection operation has been added.
- The layout of the permissions settings tab has been improved.
- A setting has been added to enable and disable borders for thumbnails.
- Margins between widgets in settings dialogs have been optimized.
