Recently, Apple has offered the new AMD Radeon Pro 5600M mobile graphics card as an exclusive option for the MacBook Pro 16, which combines the Navi 12 (RDNA) GPU and HBM2 memory. For its installation, buyers will have to pay an additional $700 on top of the base price of the laptop. It's not cheap, but in this case, the buyer will get a true gaming monster.
Previously, the Radeon Pro 5600M showed excellent results in synthetic tests conducted by Max Tech. In the same Geekbench 5 Metal, its performance was 50% higher than that of the Radeon Pro 5500M. Now it's time for practical gaming tests.
The MacBook Pro 16 was set up with Windows 10 using Bootcamp, along with the basic drivers.
First, Fortnite was launched on the MacBook Pro 16 with an Intel Core i9-9980HK processor (2.4/5.0 GHz), 32 GB of RAM, and the Radeon Pro 5600M, at the native screen resolution of 3072 × 1920 (3K) and with automatic graphics settings. Under these conditions, the game's performance reached 88 frames per second. At some moments, the FPS counter showed the psychologically significant mark of 100 frames/s.
When the game was launched on the same system but in the Windows 10 environment (via Bootcamp), at native resolution and 'epic' settings, the FPS dropped to 33 frames/s. Lowering the settings to high and the 3D Resolution parameter to 100% increased the average frame rate to 50. Further reducing the 3D resolution to 36% (equivalent to 1080p) allowed achieving 144 frames/s at 'epic' game settings.
The Radeon Pro 5600M also performed excellently in Call of Duty: Warzone. When scaling the resolution to 60% (1843 × 1152 pixels — more than Full HD), the game ran in the range of 100–140 FPS. This is practically the performance level of a full mobile graphics card like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060. It should be noted that the TDP of the Radeon Pro 5600M is just 50W, compared to 80W for the NVIDIA solution. Increasing the resolution to QuadHD (2427 × 1517 pixels) with maximum graphics settings allowed the Radeon Pro 5600M to average 60 frames/s. Even at the native 3K resolution, the maximum FPS reached nearly 70 frames.
The level of performance for the MacBook Pro in gaming is quite impressive. However, you will have to pay a hefty sum for it. For the MacBook Pro 16 configuration used in the gaming test, you'll need to spend $4000. At this price point, it's better to consider a full-fledged gaming laptop based on Windows if you really want a portable system for gaming.
