LanguageTool is a free system for checking grammar, style, spelling, and punctuation. LanguageTool can be used as a desktop application, command line tool, or as an extension for LibreOffice/Apache OpenOffice. It requires Java 8+ from Oracle or Amazon Corretto 8+. Browser extensions have been created as a separate project Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Edge. And a separate extension for Google Docs.
In the new version:
- The checking modules for Russian, English, Ukrainian, French, German, Arabic, Catalan, Dutch, Esperanto, Slovak, Spanish, and Portuguese have been updated.
- The integration capabilities with LibreOffice have been expanded.
- For the LibreOffice extension (LT 4.8 and 5.0), the ability to connect to an external LT server has been provided. You can either use a local server or connect to a central server similar to browser extensions. However, connecting to a server is not required for standard operation of the extension. The connection can be used if the server has implemented extended functionality, such as rules that use n-grams or word2vec. By default, the built-in LanguageTool engine is used in the extension.
- For LibreOffice 6.3+, the ability to customize various error underlining options has been implemented: wavy, bold, semi-bold, dotted underlining. You can choose the underline color for each category of errors. By default, green and blue colors are used to highlight errors.
Changes for the Russian module include:
- 65 new rules have been created and existing rules for punctuation and grammar checking (Java and xml) have been improved.
- The parts of speech dictionary has been expanded and corrected.
- New words have been added to the spelling check dictionary.
- The desktop version includes two variants of the spelling check dictionary. The main dictionary variant does not differentiate between the letters 'Е' and 'Ё', while the additional one does.
