Google and Canonical have implemented Flutter for creating desktop applications for Linux

Google and Canonical have proposed a joint initiative to support the development of graphical applications based on the Flutter framework for desktop Linux systems. The Flutter user interface framework is written is written in Dart (a runtime engine for executing applications is written in C++), allowing for the creation of universal applications that work across different platforms, and is seen as an alternative to React Native.

Despite the availability of the Flutter SDK for Linux, it has primarily been used for mobile app development and has not supported the build of desktop applications for Linux. Last year, Google announced its intention to add full desktop app development capabilities to Flutter and released an alpha version for such applications for macOS. Now, Flutter extended provides the ability to develop desktop applications for Linux. Support for Windows app development is still in the initial prototype phase.

For rendering the interface in Linux a layer there is a wrapper based on the GTK library (support for Qt and other toolkits is promised to be added later). In addition to Dart, the native language for Flutter used to create widgets, applications can leverage the Dart Foreign Function Interface to call code written in C/C++ and access all the capabilities of the Linux platform.

Support for Linux app development has been offered in the latest alpha release of the Flutter SDK, which also includes the ability to publish Linux applications in the Snap Store. A build of the Flutter SDKcan also be found in snap format.

For developing Flutter-based applications, it is recommended to use either the Visual Studio Code editor or the IntelliJ and Android Studio development environments. As an example of Linux programs based on Flutter, the application Flokk Contacts is provided for working with the Google Contacts address book. Three Flutter plugins with Linux support have been published in the pub.dev repository: url_launcher for opening URLs in the default browser, shared_preferences for saving settings between sessions, and path_provider
