For several years, I have been supporting 10 workstations running Microsoft Windows 8.1 at the university. The support mainly involves installing necessary software for the educational process and ensuring overall functionality.
Each station has 2 users: Administrator and Student. The Administrator has full control, while the Student cannot install software. To avoid the hassle of cleaning up the Student account, it's simply deleted and recreated afresh. This entails some tasks that need to be performed on each station.
This year, I decided to automate a large portion of these tasks using PowerShell without Active Directory and compiled some recipes I found online into this post.
Preparation
I immediately encountered issues as the stations were equipped with PS 4, and some examples from the all-knowing Internet did not work. Therefore, before running the generated scripts, a couple of actions need to be performed:
- Install
- Install the latest version
Automated actions
- Deleting/creating a user account
- Automatic login for the specified user
- Running the script upon the user's first login
Deleting/creating a user account
I started with creation. This requires performing 2 steps: creating a user () and adding them to a group (. For convenience, I combined these commands into a function:
Function New-User {
[CmdletBinding()]
param (
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$Name,
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$Password
)
$Pwd = convertto-securestring $Password -asplaintext -force
$GroupSID = "S-1-5-32-545"
New-LocalUser -User $Name -AccountNeverExpires:$true -FullName $Name -Password $Pwd -PasswordNeverExpires:$true
Add-LocalGroupMember -SID $GroupSID -Member $Name
Write-Host "-- User $Name created with password $Password" -foregroundcolor Green
}
I add to the group by SID because I found in one of the articles that the SID for the Users group is the same everywhere — S-1-5-32-545.
The deletion was organized on the following principle: to remove all accounts created by the Administrator. For this, I use the WMI class object Win32_UserProfile to identify all users who are currently inactive and not special.
Function Remove-Users {
[CmdletBinding()]
$UsersProfiles = Get-WMIObject -class Win32_UserProfile -ComputerName $env:COMPUTERNAME | Where {!($_.Loaded) -and !($_.Special)}
foreach($Usr in $UsersProfiles) {
$UsrName = $Usr.LocalPath.Split("")[2]
Write-Host "-- Removing user $UsrName ..." -foregroundcolor Green
Remove-LocalUser -Name $UsrName
Remove-WmiObject -Path $Usr.__PATH
Write-Host "-- User $UsrName removed" -foregroundcolor Green
}
}
Auto-login for the specified user
Here, everything was limited to changing the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. I also combined these actions into a small function:
Function Set-AutoLogon {
[CmdletBinding()]
param (
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$Name,
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$Password
)
$PathToWinlogon = "HKLM:SoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon"
New-ItemProperty -Path $PathToWinlogon -Name AutoAdminLogon -Value 1 -PropertyType "String"
New-ItemProperty -Path $PathToWinlogon -Name DefaultUserName -Value $Name -PropertyType "String"
New-ItemProperty -Path $PathToWinlogon -Name DefaultPassword -Value $Password -PropertyType "String"
}
Running the script upon the user's first login
It turned out that not everything can be configured before the first login of a new user (which was somewhat surprising for me). Therefore, the need arose to run a script that performs some actions after the first login:
- Configuring the proxy
- Disabling file creation on the desktop
- Configuring the user control panel
I tried several methods, but the one that worked for me was the following: setting up a task. However, I couldn't create a task using PS. So I took the longer route:
schtasks /create /tn LogonUserSettings /tr "pwsh C:ScriptsSettings.ps1" /sc onlogon /ru $env:USERDOMAIN$UserName /rp $Password /f
But that was not enough — Windows requested permission for logon as a batch job (SeBatchLogonRight). Searching for answers on how to do this led to such :

Configuring the proxy
Setting up the proxy turned out to be quite simple. was quickly found:
Function Set-Proxy {
[CmdletBinding()]
param (
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$Server,
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][Int]$Port
)
If ((Test-NetConnection -ComputerName $Server -Port $Port).TcpTestSucceeded) {

Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKCU:SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings' -name ProxyEnable -Value 1
} Else {
Write-Error -Message "-- Invalid proxy server address or port: $($Server):$($Port)"
}
}
Disabling file creation on the desktop
It took longer to deal with the restriction on creating files on the desktop than with the network. Setting permissions on the folder turned out to be not as straightforward as in *nix systems. But even here, I found answers that I successfully adapted for myself:
Function Set-AccessRule {
[CmdletBinding()]
param (
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][Path]$Folder,
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$UserName,
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$Rules,
[PARAMETER(Mandatory=$True)][String]$AccessControlType
)
# read the current ACL list of the desktop
$acl = Get-Acl $Folder
# Create a variable with the required rights
$fileSystemRights = [System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemRights]"$Rules"
# Create a variable specifying the user, access rights, and permission type
$AccessRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule($UserName, $fileSystemRights, $AccessControlType)
# Pass the variable into the FileSystemAccessRule class to create an object
$acl.SetAccessRule($AccessRule)
# Apply permissions to the folder
$acl | Set-Acl $Folder
}
Set-AccessRule -Folder $env:USERPROFILEDesktop -UserName $env:USERNAME -Rules CreateFiles,AppendData,Delete -AccessControlType Deny

Configuring the user control panel
It wasn't necessary to do this, but I thought it would be nice to provide students with a customized panel, featuring commonly used programs. The answer was found. .

Conclusion
Scripts are running, the maintenance time for each station has decreased, and the goal has been achieved. For me, as a Linux user, setting up Windows was not the easiest adventure, but it was educational. I will continue to develop the setup script. I plan to add checks for the presence of installed software and setup, as well as run antivirus.
