After two years of development project release , which develops the cron system implemented in Guile language. The new release has undergone significant code cleanup — all C language code has been rewritten, and the project now includes only source texts in Guile language.
Mcron is 100% compatible with Vixie cron and can serve as its transparent replacement. In addition to the Vixie cron configuration format, Mcron offers the ability to define scripts for periodically running tasks written in Scheme language. The Mcron implementation contains three times fewer lines of code than Vixie cron. Mcron can run without root privileges to handle tasks for the current user (a user can start their mcron daemon).
A key feature of the project is a different approach to scheduling task execution — instead of constantly monitoring time, Mcron uses a linear queue for tasks with defined delays between the invocation of each queue element. During the periods between task activations, mcron is completely inactive. This approach significantly reduces overhead when working with cron and increases the accuracy of task execution.
