The social network Instagram continues to ramp up efforts aimed at combating bots and accounts used to manipulate platform users. This time, it has been announced that Instagram will request account holders suspected of "potentially misleading behavior" to verify their identities.
According to Instagram, the new policy will not affect the majority of social network users, as it targets the verification of accounts that behave suspiciously. Based on available data, in addition to accounts noted for suspicious behavior, Instagram will verify accounts of individuals whose majority of followers are located in another country relative to their location. Additionally, identity verification will be conducted upon detection of signs of automation, which will help identify bots.
Account holders in such situations will be asked to , by providing the appropriate electronic identification. If this is not done, Instagram's administration may reduce the visibility of posts from these accounts in the Instagram feed, or even block them. Instagram and its parent company Facebook, which owns the namesake social network, are increasing their efforts to combat misinformation ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential elections this year.
