Linux kernel development statistics

Linux Foundation Organization has prepared visual report with statistics on the development of the Linux kernel.

The most interesting information:

• The first Linux kernel 0.01 included 88 files and 10,239 lines of code. The latest kernel 5.8 includes 69,325 files and 28,442,673 lines of code (over 110 million tokens). Over half of the code in the latest releases was written in the last seven years.

• The percentage of women participating in development is estimated at 8.5%, which is three times more than 10 years ago.
  
• From 2007 to 2019, 1,730 companies participated in kernel development, which prepared 780,048 commits. The 20 most active companies contributed 68% of all commits. The largest contributions came from Intel and Red Hat, which accounted for 10.01% and 8.9% of all commits, respectively. The share of commits by independent developers is estimated at 11.95%.
