The release of the Thunderbird email client 78.2.1, which has built-in support for OpenPGP enabled by default for all users, facilitating end-to-end encryption of correspondence and signing emails with a digital signature. The new release also disables the use of the MD5, SM2, and SM3 algorithms in its OpenPGP implementation.
The main difference between the built-in OpenPGP support and the previously offered Enigmail extension is the use of the library , which provides OpenPGP functionality instead of invoking the external GnuPG utility, and also employs its own key storage, incompatible with GnuPG key file formats, using the same master password protection as that used for accounts and S/MIME keys.
