Oracle has released the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel R5U4 core

Oracle Corporation released the fourth functional update for the kernel Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel R5, positioned for use in the Oracle Linux distribution as an alternative to the default kernel package from Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The kernel is available for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64) architectures. The source code of the kernel, including separate patches, has been published in the public Git repository of Oracle.

The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 5 package is based on the kernel Linux 4.14 (UEK R4 was based on kernel 4.1, and UEK R6 on 5.4), which includes new features, optimizations, and fixes, and has been validated for compatibility with most applications running on RHEL, specifically optimized for use with Oracle's industrial software and hardware. Installation and src packages for the UEK R5U4 kernel are prepared for Oracle Linux 7 (there are no barriers to using this kernel in similar versions of RHEL, CentOS, and Scientific Linux).

Key improvements:

  • Support for Process Virtual Address Space Reservation has been added, increasing the stability of Oracle's DBMS when Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) is enabled.
  • Recent releases from the main kernel include fixes and optimizations for NFS related to page cache access, RPC call handling, and NFSv4 client support. Issues with NFS running over OCSF2 have been resolved.
  • Diagnostics tools for the TCP stack have been expanded, including support for eBPF-based tracing points and reduced overhead for tracing.
  • New patches from kernel 5.6 have been backported to protect against Spectre v1 vulnerabilities.
  • Device drivers have been updated, including new driver versions for BCM573xx (bnxt_en), Intel Ethernet Switch Host Interface (fm10k), Intel Ethernet Connection XL710 (i40e), Broadcom MegaRAID SAS (megaraid_sas), LSI MPT Fusion SAS 3.0 (mpt3sas), QLogic Fibre Channel HBA (qla2xxx), Microsemi Smart Family Controller (smartpqi), Intel Volume Management Device (vmd), and VMware Virtual Machine Communication Interface (vmw_vmci).
