The Firefox Send service's operations were in early July due to its involvement in the distribution of malware, storage of components used for various attacks, and the transmission of data intercepted as a result of malware activity or user system compromises. It was planned to restore the service after implementing the ability to submit complaints regarding problematic content and creating a rapid response team, but ultimately, it was decided to completely close the service.
As a reminder, Firefox Send allowed users to upload a file to Mozilla's servers in anonymous mode with a limit of up to 1 GB and 2.5 GB when creating a registered account. On the browser side, the file was encrypted and sent to the server already in encrypted form. After uploading the file, the user was provided with a link that was generated on the client side and included an identifier and key for decryption. Using the provided link, the recipient could download the file and decrypt it on their side. The sender had the option to set the number of downloads after which the file would be deleted from Mozilla's storage, as well as the file's lifetime (from one hour to 7 days).
Firefox Notes developed as an experiment to create new methods for synchronizing encrypted data. Users were offered for Android and for desktop browsers, which allowed users to create notes while browsing web pages and work with a unified note database across different devices. In November, the Android app and its accompanying server services will be decommissioned. The browser extension will remain available for existing users of the service and will include an option to export all notes in HTML format. For new installations, the extension will become unavailable.
