Project WikiMedia Foundation has introduced a new version MediaWiki — wiki engine, a publicly accessible knowledge base that anyone can contribute to by writing an article or by adding to or correcting existing material. This release is a long-term support (LTS) version, which will be maintained for 3 years and replaces the previous LTS branch — 1.31. MediaWiki is used by the popular online encyclopedia — Wikipedia, as well as by several other wiki websites, both large ones like Wikia, and smaller organizations and individual users.
Below is a list of potentially interesting and useful changes for the end user without delving into details. The full version of the change list contains a significant number of technical details about what has been added, removed, and marked as deprecated.
- The minimum required PHP version has been raised to 7.3.19.
- The database schema has been changed, so migration / upgrade of the database schema must be performed before launching.
- The use of the HTML attribute aria-hidden is allowed on pages, allowing data within the tag to be hidden where it is applied.
- Special redirect pages have been added: Special:EditPage, Special:PageHistory, Special:PageInfo, and Special:Purge. An argument to such a page will trigger the corresponding action; for example, Special:EditPage/Foo will open the edit page for the article 'Foo'.
- Included is a PHP implementation of Parsoid, which was previously distributed as a separate Node.js server. It is needed for the operation of some extensions, like the visual editor, which also comes with the new engine version. Now, no external dependency is required for their operation.
- $wgLogos is a replacement for the deprecated options $wgLogo and $wgLogoHD for declaring the wiki site's logo. This option now has a new attribute — wordmark, which allows displaying a horizontal image of the printed logo (wordmark) along with the logo image. - $wgWatchlistExpiry is a new option for automatically cleaning up the watchlist of pages for users.
- $wgForceHTTPS enforces the use of HTTPS connections.
- $wgPasswordPolicy introduces a new password check that prohibits users from using not only their name as a password but also their password as their username. For example, a password like 'MyPass' and a username like 'ThisUsersPasswordIsMyPass'.
- Everything necessary for developing MediaWiki using a Docker container has been added.
