Microsoft has finally released an update that addresses an issue that has plagued Windows 10 users for the past few months. This concerns a problem with notifications regarding internet connectivity status that appeared for some users after installing one of the cumulative updates for Windows 10.
Earlier this year, some Windows 10 users reported issues with their internet connection. In several instances, the taskbar in Windows 10 began showing a notification indicating a lack of network connection, even when a connection was actually established. Initially, it was believed that the problem occurred after installing the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, but later this same error was found in some users of Windows 10 (1909) and earlier versions of the software platform.
Despite the seemingly minor nature of the issue — it only affects connection status notifications — it disrupts the functionality of several applications. Some apps, such as Microsoft Store or Spotify, utilize Windows APIs, which depend on the network connection status indicator located in the taskbar. When the indicator shows no connection, these applications also switch to offline mode and cannot provide users with functions that require an internet connection.
Now, Microsoft has begun distributing a patch that resolves the aforementioned problem. It is available as an optional update that can be downloaded through the Windows Update Center. After its installation, the Windows 10 build number will change to 19041.546, and the issue with notifications about the lack of internet connection will be resolved. Additionally, this patch will be included in the cumulative update set to be released later in October as part of Patch Tuesday.
