On November 15, Purism began shipping the Librem 5 phones in the mass production modification code-named Evergreen.
The shipment is divided into stages. Initially, devices for early customers will be shipped. The shipment for late customers is planned for the first quarter of 2021.
Device specifications have not changed significantly. Among the latest updates are an increased battery up to 4500 mAh.
Evergreen is not the last modification of the phone. A Fir modification is planned for the end of 2021, where the main change will be a processor made using a 14 nm technology process, which will enhance the device's energy efficiency (comparison table of i.MX 8 processors in pdf).
The Librem 5 phone is built with a focus on security and privacy. Its main feature is three hardware switches: cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth, camera + microphone.
The phone comes with a fully free operating system, PureOS. The bootloader is not locked and allows installation of other Linux distributions or operating systems. Full use of the device does not require binding to any services.
