After a year and 4 months of development, Xfce 4.16 was released.
Another significant change relates to the appearance; previously, icons in Xfce applications consisted of combinations of various icons, some of which were based on Tango, but in this version, the icons have been redrawn, and brought into a unified style, following the freedesktop.org specification.
New features were added, improvements made, and support for Gtk2 was discontinued.
Key changes in brief:
- The window manager has been significantly improved in terms of compositing and GLX. Now, if a primary monitor is set, the Alt+Tab dialog will only appear there. Cursor scaling options have been added, along with the ability to display minimized windows in the list of recently used components.
- Two tray support plugins have been combined into one. Animation has been added for hiding and showing the panel. Many minor improvements have been made, such as access to contextual actions on the desktop, the 'Window buttons' now have an option to 'Launch a new instance', and 'Desktop switching' optionally shows desktop numbering.
- Display settings now include support for fractional scaling, a preferred display mode is highlighted with an asterisk, and aspect ratios have been added next to resolutions. Returning to previous settings has become more reliable when incorrect settings are applied.
- The 'About Xfce' window displays essential information about the computer, such as the OS, processor type, graphics adapter, etc.
- In the settings manager, search and filtering capabilities have been improved; now all settings windows use CSD.
- MIME settings and 'Default Applications' have been merged into one.
- The Thunar file manager now features a pause button for file operations, remembers view settings for each directory, and supports transparency (if a special Gtk theme is set). There is now the ability to use environment variables in the address bar ($HOME, etc.). An option has been added to rename copied files if a file with the same name already exists in the destination folder.
- The thumbnail service has become more flexible, thanks to the ability to exclude paths. Support for the .epub format has been added.
- The session manager has improved support for GPG Agent 2.1 and its visual component.
- The power manager plugin on the panel now supports more visual states; previously, the battery had only 3 visual states. Notifications for low battery charge are no longer shown when connected to a charger. The settings applied for battery usage and stationary power have been separated.
- The garcon menu library has new APIs. Now, launched applications are not children of the application that invoked the menu, as this previously caused application crashes along with the panel.
- Appfinder now allows sorting applications by frequency of use.
- The hotkey configuration interface has been improved; new hotkeys have been added for invoking Thunar and for tiling window grouping.
- The external appearance of applications has been unified.
- New default wallpapers!
