In desktop spins of Fedora, which already use the Btrfs filesystem by default, there are plans to also enable transparent data compression using the library Zstd from Facebook. This concerns the upcoming release of Fedora 34, which is expected to be available at the end of April. In addition to saving disk space, transparent data compression is also aimed at reducing wear on SSDs and other flash storage. Furthermore, an increase in performance during read and write operations is anticipated.
The use of transparent compression will also affect the operation of some utilities, such as du, since the file size may significantly differ from the disk space it occupies. As an alternative, utilities like compsize.
