The streaming organization program msd is open under a BSD license.

The source texts of the msd (Multi Stream daemon) project have been translated to the BSD license, and the source code is published on GitHub. Previously, only a shortened version, msd_lite, was distributed in the source texts, and the main product was proprietary. Besides changing the license, work has been done to port it to the macOS platform (previously supported FreeBSD and Linux).

The msd program is designed to organize IPTV streaming over the network via the HTTP protocol. One server is capable of servicing several thousand clients simultaneously. The main focus is on achieving maximum performance, as well as providing fine-tuning options that affect the quality of service perceived by clients: channel switching speed, resilience to transmission failures. Proxied operation in a 'one-to-many' mode has been implemented: data received through a single HTTP connection can be distributed among multiple connected clients.

Features

  • Support for IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.
  • MPEG2-TS stream analyzer.
  • Automatic switching to a backup in the absence of or errors on the current source.
  • Zero Copy on Send (ZCoS) — reduces overhead for servicing connected clients, with all data transmission tasks being handled by the OS kernel.
  • Support for 'half closed' HTTP clients.
  • Receiving UDP multicast, including RTP, simultaneously from different interfaces.
  • Receiving via TCP-HTTP-GET (in a single stream and broadcasting to multiple clients).
  • Automatic disconnection from sources if there are no connected clients.
  • Use of various TCP Congestion Control algorithms depending on the port to which the client connected and the client's URL request.
  • 'Smart' sending of MPEG2-TS headers to new clients.
  • Instant sending of data from the circular buffer to the new client to minimize waiting time before playback starts.
  • Sending any additional HTTP headers in requests and responses.
  • Configuration templates for Stream Hub and stream sources.
  • Detailed statistics for each TCP connection to simplify troubleshooting at the network level.
