The release of the Kali Linux 2021.1 distribution has taken place, designed for testing systems for vulnerabilities, conducting audits, analyzing residual information, and identifying the consequences of attacks by malicious actors. All original developments created within the framework of the distribution are distributed under the GPL license and are available through a public Git repository. Several ISO image options are prepared for download, with sizes of 380 MB, 3.4 GB, and 4 GB. The builds are available for x86, x86_64, ARM (armhf and armel, Raspberry Pi, Banana Pi, ARM Chromebook, Odroid) architectures. By default, the Xfce desktop is offered, but KDE, GNOME, MATE, LXDE, and Enlightenment e17 are supported optionally.
Kali includes one of the most comprehensive toolsets for computer security specialists: from tools for testing web applications and penetrating wireless networks to software for reading data from RFID identification chips. It comes with a collection of exploits and over 300 specialized utilities for security checks, such as Aircrack, Maltego, SAINT, Kismet, Bluebugger, Btcrack, Btscanner, Nmap, p0f. Additionally, the distribution includes tools for accelerating password cracking (Multihash CUDA Brute Forcer) and WPA keys (Pyrit) using CUDA and AMD Stream technology, allowing the utilization of NVIDIA and AMD GPUs for computational operations.
In the new release:
- Updated versions of the Xfce 4.16 and KDE Plasma 5.20 desktops. The GTK3 theme used in Xfce has been upgraded.
- The styling of terminal emulators xfce4-terminal, tilix, terminator, konsole, qterminal, and mate-terminal has been aligned. The font used in terminals has been updated.
- A command-not-found handler has been added to provide suggestions when attempting to launch a program that is not present in the system. It supports notifications for typos when entering existing commands and attempts to launch commands that are absent from the system but available in the package repository.

- Kali ARM has added support for WiFi on Raspberry Pi 400 and initial support for booting using the Parallels virtualization system on Apple hardware with the new M1 chip.
The release of NetHunter 2021.1 has been prepared simultaneously, an environment for mobile devices based on the Android platform, featuring a collection of tools for testing systems for vulnerabilities. With NetHunter, it is possible to verify attacks specific to mobile devices, for example, through emulating USB device operations (BadUSB and HID Keyboard — emulating a network USB adapter that can be used for MITM attacks, or a USB keyboard performing character substitution) and creating rogue access points (MANA Evil Access Point). NetHunter is installed in the standard environment of the Android platform as a chroot image, in which a specially adapted version of Kali Linux runs. The new version updates BusyBox 1.32 and Rucky 2.1 (a tool for attacking through USB devices) and adds a new boot splash screen.
