Chrome developers announced the addition of a new experimental setting in the test branches Chrome Canary, Dev, and Beta: "chrome://flags#omnibox-default-typed-navigations-to-https". When activated, this setting will open websites by default using the "https://" scheme instead of "http://" when typing hostnames in the address bar. The upcoming release of Chrome 89 on March 2 will enable this feature by default for a small percentage of users, and if no unforeseen issues arise, the default use of HTTPS will be offered to everyone in the Chrome 90 release.
As a reminder, despite significant efforts to promote HTTPS in browsers, typing a domain in the address bar without specifying a protocol still defaults to "http://". To address this issue, Firefox 83 implemented an optional "HTTPS Only" mode, which automatically redirects all unencrypted requests to their secure page versions ("http://" is replaced with "https://"). This replacement is not limited to the address bar and also applies to sites explicitly opened by "http://", as well as when loading resources within a page. If the redirect to https:// times out, the user is shown an error page that includes a button to make the request over "http://".
