New releases of the Linux From Scratch 10.1 (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch 10.1 (BLFS) guides have been presented, as well as editions of LFS and BLFS with the system manager systemd. Linux From Scratch provides instructions for building a basic Linux system from scratch, using only the source code of the necessary software. Beyond Linux From Scratch complements the LFS instructions with information about building and configuring around 1000 software packages, covering various applications from DBMS and server systems to graphical shells and media players.
In Linux From Scratch 10.1, the transition to Glibc 2.33, Linux kernel 5.10.17, SysVinit 2.98, and Systemd 247 has been made. 40 packages have been updated, including Binutils 2.36.1, Autoconf 2.71, Bash 5.1, Eudev 3.2.10, Grep 3.6, Inetutils 2.0, IPRoute2 5.10.0, Meson 0.57.1, Perl 5.32.1, Python 3.9.2, Tar 1.34, Tcl 8.6.11, Util-Linux 2.36.2, Vim 8.2.2433, and Zstd 1.4.8. Errors in boot scripts have been corrected, and editorial improvements have been made throughout the explanatory materials in the book.
In Beyond Linux From Scratch 10.1, around 850 programs have been updated, including GNOME 3.38, KDE Plasma 5.21, KDE Applications 20.12.2, LibreOffice 7.1, Ffmpeg 4.3.2, GIMP 2.10.22, Inkscape 1.0.2, Thunderbird 78.8.0, Firefox 78.8.0, SeaMonkey 2.53.6, etc.
In addition to LFS and BLFS, several additional books have been released within the project:
- ‘Automated Linux From Scratch’ — a framework for automating the building of LFS systems and managing packages;
- ‘Cross Linux From Scratch’ — a description of cross-platform building of LFS systems, supporting architectures: x86, x86_64, sparc, mips, PowerPC, alpha, hppa, arm;
- ‘Hardened Linux From Scratch’ — instructions for increasing the security of LFS, applying additional patches and restrictions;
- «LFS Hints» is a collection of additional advice describing alternative solutions for the steps outlined in LFS and BLFS;
- «LFS LiveCD» is a project for preparing a LiveCD. It is currently not being developed.
