Businesses using the 'Self-support' plan have noticed a significant increase in subscription costs when using Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server on virtual machines. Red Hat has discontinued the old self-support subscription option RH0197181 in favor of the new RH00005. According to Red Hat representatives, the sale of new subscriptions under the RH0197181 plan was stopped back in 2015, but old subscriptions continued to be valid.
Both the old and new plans involve waiving technical support services and are sold at the same price of $349 per year. The difference is that the new plan allows the use of RHEL only on physical servers, whereas the old one allowed installation of the distribution on virtual machines. Additionally, the new plan includes a note stating that it is not intended for production environments. Therefore, users running RHEL on virtual machines are now forced to use the standard plan with technical support, which costs $799 per year.
Furthermore, Red Hat representatives clarified that the expanded Red Hat Developer program, which allows free use of RHEL in environments with up to 16 virtual or physical systems, is available only for individual developers and not for businesses. This means that company employees can use distributions under the Red Hat Developer subscription only for personal purposes, but commercial use of RHEL in the enterprise requires the purchase of a license.
