A new way to find compatible components for upgrading your computer is available through the hw-probe telemetry client and the supported hardware database from the Linux-Hardware.org project. The idea is quite simple — different users of the same model of a computer (or motherboard) may use different individual components for various reasons: differences in configurations, upgrades, or repairs, and installation of additional hardware. Therefore, if at least two people have submitted telemetry data for the same model of computer, they can be provided with a list of the components of the other as options for an upgrade.
This method does not require knowledge of computer specifications or technical expertise regarding the compatibility of individual components — you simply select the components that have already been installed and tested by other users or the supplier on the same computer.
A "Find compatible parts for upgrade" button has been added to the probe page of each computer in the database for searching compatible hardware. Thus, to find compatible components for your computer, it is enough to create a probe for it in the most suitable way. By doing so, a participant not only helps themselves but also other users in upgrading their hardware who will later search for components. For operating systems other than Linux, you can find the required computer model in the search or create a probe using any Linux Live USB. The hw-probe program is currently available in most Linux distributions, as well as in most BSD system variants.
Upgrading a computer or laptop traditionally presents challenges and errors for various reasons: architectural incompatibility (differences in chipset generations, differences in the types and generations of slots for hardware, etc.), "vendor locks" (dependence on the supplier), incompatibility of certain components from different manufacturers (for example, Samsung SSDs with AMD AM2/AM3 motherboards), and more.
