The release of the dual-panel file manager GNOME Commander 1.12.0 has taken place, optimized for use in the GNOME desktop environment. GNOME Commander offers features such as tabs, command line access, bookmarks, customizable color schemes, the ability to skip directories when selecting files, access to external data via FTP and SAMBA, extendable context menus, automatic mounting of external drives, navigation history access, plugin support, a built-in text and image viewer, search functions, renaming by mask, and directory comparison.
The new version includes GIO as a dependency, providing a unified VFS API for abstracting access to local and remote file systems. The migration process from GnomeVFS to GIO has begun. GIO is already being used instead of GnomeVFS for opening files in the default application and for filtering the file list.
