Mozilla developers have decided not to remove the compact display mode for panels and to continue providing related functionality. However, the visible user setting for selecting the panel mode (hamburger menu in the panel -> Customize -> Density -> Compact or Personalization -> Icons -> Compact) will be removed by default. To restore the setting, a parameter 'browser.compactmode.show' will appear in about:config, returning the button to activate compact mode, but with a note about the lack of official support. For users with the compact mode enabled, the parameter will be automatically activated.
The change will be implemented in the Firefox 89 release, scheduled for May 18, which will also include the introduction of updated design elements being developed under the Proton project. It should be noted that the compact mode uses smaller buttons and eliminates unnecessary spaces around panel elements and the tab area to free up additional vertical space for content. The mode was planned to be removed due to the desire to simplify the interface and offer a design that suits the majority of users.
Additionally, it can be noted that in Firefox 88, scheduled for April 20, WebRender is expected to be activated for all Linux users, including Xfce and KDE desktops, all versions of Mesa, and systems with NVIDIA drivers (previously, WebRender was enabled only for GNOME with Intel and AMD drivers). WebRender is written in Rust and allows for significant increases in rendering speed and reduced CPU load by offloading rendering operations to the GPU, which are implemented through GPU shaders. To force enable it in about:config, the setting 'gfx.webrender.enabled' should be activated or Firefox should be launched with the environment variable MOZ_WEBRENDER=1.
