His departure is attributed to a desire to no longer tolerate the mocking, offensive, and unfriendly behavior of certain community members. The final straw was a discussion regarding the advisability of retaining some outdated features of the Perl language (Sawyer X is one of the initiators of the Perl 7 branch aimed at replacing Perl 5 with a break in backward compatibility, which some other developers disagree with).
After a restructuring of the project's management process, Sawyer X, along with Ricardo Signes and Neil Bowers, was elected to the decision-making steering committee related to the development of Perl.
