The release of the specialized distribution Tails 4.18 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been formed, based on the Debian package base and designed to ensure anonymous online access. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor system. By default, all connections except traffic through the Tor network are blocked by a packet filter. User data is stored using encryption in persistent mode between reboots. An ISO image has been prepared that can operate in Live mode, with a size of 1 GB.
In this new release, the notification to synchronize system clocks ('Synchronizing the system’s clock') has been removed when connecting to the Tor network. Poedit has been removed; the project has transitioned to Weblate for managing translations. Versions Tor Browser 10.0.16 and Thunderbird 78.9.0 have been updated. Packages with firmware have been refreshed, and support for wireless and graphical chips has been improved. For increased reliability, HTTPS is now used when accessing Debian repositories instead of accessing via onion addresses (there are failures observed in Debian onion service operations).
At the same time, a new version of Tor Browser 10.0.16 has been released, focused on ensuring anonymity, security, and privacy. This release is synchronized with the Firefox 78.10.0 ESR code base, which has resolved 8 vulnerabilities. NoScript version 11.2.4 has been updated. The use of SVG Context Paint is prohibited. The developers also reminded that support for the second version of the Tor protocol is scheduled for removal from the code base on July 15, 2021, and a new stable release of Tor without support for the old protocol will be released on October 15, 2021.
