Linus Torvalds has accepted a change into the Linux kernel that removes the implementation of the ReiserFS filesystem. This FS was declared obsolete last year and is slated for removal in 2025. The change has been accepted into the branch that will form kernel 6.13 (release expected in early February). The key reason for removing ReiserFS is to reduce the maintenance workload in the kernel […]
Kent Overstreet, the developer of the Bcachefs filesystem, reported that the future of his developing filesystem in the kernel is in question due to actions by the committee responsible for enforcing the code of conduct among developers (CoC Committee). Linus Torvalds refused to accept another batch of patches for Bcachefs into the 6.13 kernel branch, citing complaints from the CoC committee. After several […]

The Proxmox Virtual Environment 8.3 has been released, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux aimed at deploying and managing virtual servers using LXC and KVM, capable of serving as an alternative to products such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix Hypervisor. The size of the installation ISO image is 1.4 GB. Proxmox VE provides tools for deploying a fully operational virtual […]
The Wine project has released the vkd3d 1.14 package with an implementation of Direct3D 12, working through call translation to the Vulkan graphics API. The package includes the libvkd3d libraries with the Direct3D 12 implementation, libvkd3d-shader with translator for shader models 4 and 5, and libvkd3d-utils with functions to simplify the porting of Direct3D 12 applications, along with a set of demonstration examples including the glxgears port […]
GitHub has announced the initiative 'GitHub Secure Open Source Fund', aimed at funding efforts to enhance the security of open-source projects. In the first phase, it plans to select 125 projects and invest a total of $1.25 million in them. Applications from project maintainers for funding will be accepted until January 7. Eligible are project maintainers with open licenses residing in regions, […]
On Tuesday, November 19, the re2c release was presented – a generator of lexical analyzers (also known as a regular expression compiler to code in the target programming language). re2c specializes in generating fast and easily embeddable lexers. It differs from the more well-known flex alternative by offering a flexible interface, generating optimized non-table lexers, and supporting submatch extraction based on deterministic finite automata with […]
On November 19, versions 1.21 and 2.7 of the ncdu (NCurses Disk Usage) utility for analyzing disk usage with a text user interface were released. The utility is written in C (LTS version) and Zig (version 2.*) using the ncurses library and is distributed under the MIT license. The Zig version includes added multithreaded scanning and a new binary format (with built-in compression) for exporting scan results. […]
After more than a year of development, the release of the open-source parametric 3D modeling system FreeCAD 1.0 has been published, featuring flexible customization and functional expansion capabilities through plug-ins. The interface is built using the Qt library. Plug-ins can be created in Python. It supports saving and loading models in various formats, including STEP, IGES, and STL. The FreeCAD code is distributed under […]
Canonical has released the MicroCloud 2.1 cloud infrastructure management toolkit, enabling rapid deployment of cloud systems and computing clusters with shared distributed data storage and a secure virtual network on your own hardware. MicroCloud 2.1 is touted as the first LTS release that will ensure a long support cycle. MicroCloud is packaged as a snap package, including components necessary for managing the operation of cluster nodes. […]
FreeCAD is a modern free (LGPLv2+) CAD software written in C++ using Qt for the graphical interface and Python for scripts. The first major version introduces the long-awaited solution to the topological naming issue, adds an assembly workbench (no longer requiring installation through the add-ons manager), and improves the user interface appearance. Main changes General changes: The topological naming problem has been addressed thanks to the efforts of several […]
Nastene (also known as ii) is a distributed messaging system, an extremely simplified Fido. Operations occur with two objects. The message object is a message. The echo object is a named list of messages. Stations download lists from other stations based on pre-defined routing, and then retrieve messages they do not have. Points write messages at the station (via the web interface or client). That's all, this […]
